What initially inspired you to pursue a career in music? What was it like studying at Morehouse College?
“I was inspired by my love for music. (Music) became my passion at a very young age. (Studying at Morehouse) was great since I was going (to school) for something I wanted to do. I owe it to my mother and those who supported me, though, for helping (me) to get through college.”
What is life like in Houston, Texas? What can you tell us about the music scene(s) of Houston?
“Life in Houston is cool, it’s a great music scene and (there is) a lot of love here.”
You’ve spent the past week at SXSW in Austin, Texas correct? What was this experience like?
“Man, it has been phenomenal, I can’t even explain it. I (was able) to perform with Rueben’s Bell and Speech from Arrested Development while here at SXSW.
What experiences and events inspired the writing and recording of your new singles ‘Magic’ and ‘Bodyguard’? How do these new singles expand on or differ from your self-titled debut album as well as your other previous releases (specifically ‘Frosty’, ‘Alcoholic Logic’, ‘My People’ and ‘Shades of Gray’)?
“(These songs were inspired by) a lot of life experiences and by friends that I sometimes go out with. ‘Magic’ in itself is a song that has more of a commercial sound while ‘Bodyguard’ is and was more of my breakout release (being that it was my first through) Sony’s distribution platform The Orchard.”
What does a typical J Metro live performance look and sound like?
“You’ll have to come out and see. I will say I always entertain.”
Tell us about your involvement with Spaced Out Magazine; how did this opportunity to work together come about?
I’ve known the owner, Rueben Wood, for some years now. We (recently) spoke about some things and he asked me what I needed, and I told him. A week later my manager and I and had a phone conversation with Wood that led to my distribution deal.
What went into the making of the music video for your single ‘Bodyguard’? Who did you work with to complete this project?
“The video was filmed and directed by Rueben Wood; he came up with a concept and a vision for the video that came to life on screen. The video went on to win some awards and (received) more recognition then any of my previous videos.”
Tell us about the upcoming release party for ‘Magic’ on April 17. What else will you be focusing on during the rest of 2015?
“The release party will be at Ovations Night Club in Houston and begins at 8 PM CST. (During the remainder of 2015) I will be focusing on the release of my debut EP “Sentir Mon Amour”.
